Basic Info
Name:holeygloves
Bio
Character: chaos (Yeshua)

Series: Xenosaga

Version: post-Also Sprach Zarathustra (the last game in the series)

Age: Unknown, although he appears to be in his late teens.

Gender: Male

Sexuality: Unknown, but will be presumed straight

Appearance: Although the whole of his appearance is filled with oddities, chaos can be primarily noted by his tan skin, distinct silver hair and overly bright blue-green eyes. Because he is often in space with the crew he works for, his main choices for clothing consist of simple shirts and pants that can fit underneath a space suit, as well as a thin body suit underneath his normal clothing. He also constantly wears gloves, partly for working and partly for personal reasons.

Personality: Out of the cast of characters, chaos is the most serene. He is usually quiet, and only speaks when he feels that it is necessary to, or helpful to the situation at hand. Despite this, he remains approachable, and is the one the other characters go to for advice because of his calming nature. He is laid-back to the point of being teased for it, and when he is forced to fight, he does so as quickly and mercifully as he can. He is loyal, and is happy to serve as a means of support to his friends and crewmates in the midst of larger events. He is also very trusting in the abilities of others, to the point where he helps only if asked to or if the help is needed.

Abilities/Weaponry/Strengths: Aside from being an affable and mellow person, chaos is also able to empathize with most of the people he encounters, and makes friends easily as a result. chaos is a jack-of-all-trades, and is able to do most tasks people set to him, although he is best at being a mechanic and working with computers. chaos can also fight with his bare hands, and has the ability to generate ‘chi’ (although it is never named as such within the games) to use as a weapon.
The most formidable of his talents is the ability to cause things to disintegrate, which was revealed when a Gnosis (the main threat within the games) attacked the ship he worked on. The last two abilities explicitly shown within the game is that chaos is a telepath, and that he has the power to teleport, although he uses both sparingly. Since the rules for his teleportation are never explained, I will be restricting the ability to where he can only use it if he has already physically been to the place he is trying to reach.

Weaknesses: Although chaos has the potential to be exceedingly powerful, he willingly limits himself down to where he only has enough power to protect himself. It is stated that he becomes more powerful when he allows direct contact with his hands, and as such, chaos always makes sure to wear thick gloves. He also lacks most of the energy to implement his full abilities, and even when he finally regains access to this energy, does not use it for fear of what could occur.

In terms of personal weakness, chaos is often too hesitant, and as such, rarely allows himself to lead his friends in emergency situations, even when it would be best for him to do so. He also has a tendency to hide information, and refuses to talk about his personal life, even when pressed. Despite being friendly, chaos doesn’t reach out to people on his own accord, and even when he travels with Shion and the other characters for an extended amount of time, is not truly willing to connect with them on a deeper level until near the end of the series.

History: Very little is known about chaos until the very end of the series, and even then, most of the information is given by the game, or by others that are aware of his existence.

The story of chaos’ origin is that he was the physical manifestation of the power of Anima, which exists as part of the collective unconscious that makes up the universe the humans live within. Anima, within the game, is the force that all humans contain within themselves and use, but also begins to serve as a power that will keep the universe in existence. Although the collective unconscious remains the true state of the universe, many humans begin to unhealthily isolate themselves, and as a result, cause distortions all throughout the universe, causing it to slowly break apart. Anima is then used by existences on a different plane within the universe (the Upper Domain) as a failsafe, which would activate if humans continued to break apart instead of allowing themselves to connect to others. If activated, the failsafe would destroy the plane the humans lived within (called the Lower Domain), and ensure the continuing existence of the rest of the planes, instead of the complete destruction of the universe.

Despite this, chaos himself still has his own individuality, and decides to live as a human being on the Lower Domain in order to understand the situation, although he himself is technically one of those existences on the Upper Domain. He first appears during the time when Jesus lived and taught, and eventually works under the other as one of his followers, quietly performing minor miracles. During this time, he also meets the physical manifestation of Animus (the power meant to restrict Anima), known as Mary Magdalene. The two grow to be as close as siblings, and eventually end up directly aiding Jesus in spreading his teachings.

Other humans begin to grow restless, and convince both chaos (then Yeshua) and Mary to aid them in using technology that had been developed with the intent of surpassing the gods (those in the Upper Domain). Both agree, and when the attempt to use the technology is made, the failsafe function within chaos activates because of so many individuals using their latent powers of Anima to attempt to break free from the collective unconscious. Mary is forced to use her own powers to break the power into physical fractions of what it once was, and manages to postpone the destruction that would’ve been caused, sacrificing her life in order to do so.

After the artifacts containing chaos’ powers were hidden away, both he and Mary disappear from history. Thousands of years later, after another similar incident causes Earth to vanish from the universe and forced humans to colonize other planets, chaos reappears as a crewmember of a ship called the Elsa. Although it is unknown how long he had worked for the crew, it is assumed that he knew them for years. He lives on the ship with them until Shion and the others come onboard.

From then on, he helps the others on their various quests, and serves no major purpose until the third game, Also Sprach Zarathustra. In Zarathustra, the Gnosis (strange life forms that come from imaginary space) have overwhelmed more than half of the human population, and it is while trying to find a solution to the problem that Shion and the others discover the truth of the collective unconscious and the universe being slowly destroyed as a result of humans isolating themselves from others. Wilhelm, the main antagonist, gives them the option of allowing Eternal Recurrence—in which the universe is reset, and all life forms of the universe relive the same lives over and over again, until the universe once again begins to decay. Shion and the others refuse to let it happen, and chaos stands up for their sense of free will, stating that humans can figure out another way to save the universe without Eternal Recurrence, and before his function as the failsafe activates. After destroying the means Wilhelm had to start Eternal Recurrence, chaos tells the others to flee, and that he is certain that another solution can be found within the universe. He informs Shion and the others that once the find a solution, they must seek out Earth (now known as Lost Jerusalem), where he and all the other presences causing additional disruption will be waiting.

Once the others flee, he, KOS-MOS, and several other people similar to him use the last of their powers to shift all of the Gnosis and themselves to where Earth is, in a different dimension of space, knowing that their existences might disappear entirely as a result. The shift transition is successful, and as the others begin to search for a way to Earth and to help what remains of the human race, chaos finds himself in an entirely new place...
